Reducing Risk for CLIA – What to look for in 2025

In one of our last news emails (which you can subscribe to here), we discussed the 2025 projection made by several insurers that medical costs would rise by at least 10 percent, with medical inflation making up a large part of that. As you approach a new year of inspections and maintaining employee competencies, avoiding unnecessary citations and fines becomes paramount.

These are two of the primary areas that can cause unexpected costs, if not properly managed and monitored.

Inadequate, Incomplete or Delayed Documentation

It can be difficult to gather documentation in advance of an inspection if your document control policies are limited and if there’s inconsistent coordination across your organization. This is especially true if you’re working against a deadline or if your organization lacks a digitized document control solution.

If you don’t already have an employee competency document control solution or a method for tracking laboratory tasks, the end of the year is a great time to evaluate whether your needs are being met by your current approach.

Staff-Centric Scheduling Practices

While not directly tied into citation costs, it’s important to balance staffing levels to ensure your employees are getting proper time to recuperate, especially after a 10 hour or longer shift. Employees are less likely to make clerical mistakes on critical documents after adequate rest. Keeping your staff at the center of your considerations is a great way to both build trust and foster sustainable scheduling practices.
